Ice climbing Telemark skiing Skating on natural ice

Some quick facts about skating in Sweden: Stockholm is perhaps the best place in the world for long-distance skating. The archipelago has more than 20.000 islands, and there are more than 20.000 lakes in the Stockholm area. The season starts in November and continues until April. Special skates have evolved, that are fastened under sturdy walking boots so that the skates can be quickly taken off when one needs to walk between lakes or on ice which is not suitable for skating. The safety equipment consists of "is-dubbar" (to get a grip on the ice so that one can get up after falling through thin ice), an "is-pik" (to probe the thickness of the ice) and a rucksack with a complete set of dry clothes packed in plastic bags (this acts as a flotation device as well). One also brings food and drink in the rucksack.
